A Message from the Mystic Chorale Board of Directors regarding plans for the Fall 2021 Season

May 28, 2021

Dear Members,

We are all wondering what the fall season will look like for Mystic Chorale. We don’t have answers yet, but this message will give you a heads up about plans we are looking to make and what you can be thinking about regarding your participation. We are all hopeful that we can return to safely singing together live.

The Board, along with Nick and Linda, are researching government guidelines as they change, attending webinars with experts and checking with our vendors as well as other choruses to gather information. At the moment, First Parish in Arlington and Tremont Temple are not giving out any information about when they might re-open and what requirements and/or restrictions they might have when they do. Cary Hall in Lexington has events booked starting in September and we are wait-listed for some dates there in hopeful expectation.

Mystic leadership has an all-day retreat scheduled in mid-June where we hope to make a lot of progress toward final decisions for the fall season. All the decisions that we make will be in complete compliance with the CDC and Massachusetts state government requirements and recommendations.

In the meantime, here are some things for you to think about regarding your participation in a live season. Ultimately, no matter what Mystic Chorale decides, your decision to participate and responsibility for your wellbeing is yours.

The following are possibilities:

  • We may require full vaccination to attend live rehearsals and to sing in the concerts.
  • We may require singers to complete an online pre-screen form as part of the season signup and on a weekly basis.
  • We may require masks to be worn while singing. These may need to be ‘singer masks’, a special kind of mask designed for singing, that fits tightly to the face and is double layered.
  • We may require singers to sign a liability waiver.
  • We may be required to restrict the number of singers who can be present in the rehearsal and concert spaces at one time. This might mean that singers will need to attend rehearsal via Zoom some weeks and attend a live rehearsal some weeks.
  • We may need to have windows and doors open in the rehearsal space with fans blowing fresh air into the room.
  • We may need to restrict the number of people who can be in the rehearsal space bathrooms at one time.
  • We may require live audience members to wear a facemask and to sit spaced out.
  • We may need to hold concerts without audiences as streaming events only.

We plan to announce decisions for the fall at our virtual Annual Meeting, Tuesday, June 29, following a short Nick sing, so be sure to tune in. Details on the meeting will come in an email later in June.

In addition to the safety issues, we will be looking at how we can provide support for a hybrid season so singers can still participate from out of state.

We are seeing how circumstances can change quickly and unexpectedly (as they did on March 10th, 2020) so our plans are subject to change as circumstances require. Please research and think about what you will feel comfortable with, come September.

Please help us with our planning by filling out this very short survey BY JUNE 13 about how you think you might participate in the fall.
